Toshiba Marks 25th Anniversary of Invention of NAND Flash Technology
Today marks the 25th anniversary of Toshiba's invention of NAND flash memory. NAND flash has considerably impacted our world, making many of the great products we use today, like USB flash drives, possible.
Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC), an industry leader and innovator that collaborates with other major technology companies to create breakthrough designs, today announced that it has reached a milestone - April 3, 2012 marks the 25th anniversary of Toshiba's invention of NAND flash memory.
A lot has changed since Toshiba first launched the technology in 1987. The NAND flash market has grown enormously, with flash memory shipping eight times more gigabytes (GB) in 2011 than its counterpart, Dynamic random-access memory (DRAM).
NAND flash has since become the highest selling high density silicon storage on the market. NAND flash memory is utilized in most memory cards, memory sticks and USB drives, and is found in a number of consumer, industrial and enterprise cloud applications. Toshiba's creation has paved the way to a new era in which consumers are able to carry videos, music, books and data files with them wherever they go.
The advantages of this were incomprehensible at the time. The idea of carrying all of your most vital information, literally thousands of files, and all in the palm of your hand, was simply unheard of. But NAND flash made it possible.
Constructed with an incredibly small cell size to allow a very low cost-per-bit of stored data, Toshiba's NAND flash technology has stimulated the mobility of content, thus fueling innovation in the development of products for everyone from consumers to enterprise.
"NAND flash has truly permeated our lives - this technology has been a game changer, making the world a different place and making many of the products we use today possible," commented Scott Nelson, vice president of the Memory Business Unit, TAEC. "The cost/performance of NAND flash continues to stand the test of time. NAND flash is leading the way to thin and light hardware, has made the mobility of content possible, and is enabling 'green' storage in the data centers."
Toshiba's commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the invention of NAND flash will continue throughout all of 2012 with notable industry events and consumer participation giveaways - an interactive campaign that celebrates industry voices and experiences that explore the impact of NAND flash memory and promote it throughout the world.
A accomplished electronic components industry leader, Toshiba engineers and manufactures high-quality flash memory-based storage solutions, solid state drives (SSDs), hard disk drives (HDDs), discrete devices, LCD displays, advanced materials, medical tubes, custom SoCs/ASICs, imaging products, microcontrollers and wireless components that make possible today's leading cell phones, MP3 players, cameras, medical devices, automotive electronics, enterprise solutions and more.
Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. is an independent operating company owned by Toshiba America, Inc., a subsidiary of Toshiba Corporation, Japan's largest semiconductor manufacturer and the world's fourth largest semiconductor manufacturer. Toshiba was founded in 1875 and today has over 490 subsidiaries and affiliates, with over two hundred thousand employees worldwide and annual sales of $77 billion.
